The 2018 Sheriff's Cup sponsored by PBI was held from the 4th to the 6th of June at a very challenging Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club.
The competition was hosted by Merseyside FRS

This year's PBI Sheriffs Cup was hosted by Merseyside FRS Golf Society at the two-time Ryder Cup venue Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club.
The practice day on Monday gave an insight of what the 45 teams would expect in the following 2 days of competition: calm mornings followed by moderate winds in the afternoon on a very tough James Braid links course, which would produce worthy winners for both the nett and gross competitions for the South Yorkshire team consisting of; Grant Morrow, Lee Everton, Shane Toulson and Lee Schofield with a very creditable 435 nett 483 gross.
Those that went out early on Tuesday morning posted the scores in the pairs competition that would put them in good stead for the following days singles. Early contenders included Essex, Cornwall, South York’s., West York’s (1), Kent, Hereford and Worcester, Scotland East, and GMC (3). Those that found it tough on Tuesday afternoon would have the calm of the Wednesday morning to put in good singles scores as shown by James Benson (Cumbria) with a tremendous 74/69.
Following the days challenges of a challenging links course, it was a pleasure to see the camaraderie on the terrace on completion of everyone rounds spill over to the evening and to the presentation which was extremely well attended. Don Stirrup acting as MC distributed the subsidiary prizes, followed by the Captain of S&A Martin Bennet commenting on the organisation of the competition, professionalism of fire-fighters and the friendship shown during the few day’s competition.
Paul Walker (Chair) spoke to thank all competitors for their support for the golf section, to S&A for hosting the championship on such a wonderful golf course, to the organising team for arranging a flawless competition, and finally and by no means least; Paul on behalf of all fire service golfers gave thanks to Ian Callaghan, (Mr.PBI) who we are totally indebted to for his continued friendship and support, for sponsoring the most prestigious event in the FireSport UK Golf Section calendar....(Just not on a Links course).
On a personal note I would like to thank Geoff Owens (Staffs) for his tremendous and tireless hard work in sorting out the scoring system, Matt (Sec) and Mick (treasurer), National committee, for their continued help and support and all the other Golf section Sec’s and Golfers that gave me encouragement and support throughout.
And finally, to all the golfers who played over the three days for making the event a great success.
