The Sprue Safety Firesport UK National Pairs 2017 was held at Hessle Golf Club, East Yorkshire on 18th & 19th May. On the Wednesday a month’s worth of rain fell in a day. Fortunately the course stood up to the test and was in a vast array of lush green grass to welcome all 42 pairs who travelled from around the country to participate.
After Day 1 and some fabulous weather to help dry the course from some of the previous day’s precipitation, the scoring was very tight around the level par make other than a clear leader from Shropshire who had a nett -9 including an eagle on a par 4. After the first day the greenkeepers were out at 1800-2200 preparing the course for the next day.
Unfortunately the rain fell again on the night and looked to spoil the second day with the forecast. A decision was made to try and get everyone out as early as possible so that we could try and beat the adverse weather. Although the main deluge didn’t appear until later on, the rain had slowed down the greens on both days. Judging by the comments made surrounding the burrowing’s on the greens, this was a blessing for most people.
South Yorkshire A consisting of Grant Morrow and Lee Everton were the overall gross winners with 152. Shropshire A consisting of Carl Franks and Neil Grove protected their immense lead after day 1 with a level score finishing with a nett 135.
Whilst the prizes were being allocated and scores double checked, a raffle was drawn with a 1st prize of a trip for 2 to Vale De Lobo in Portugal for 3 rounds and 2 nights. The winning ticket was drawn by Davy Bell from Cleveland.
Nearly £400 was made for the Captain’s Charity from the generosity of the players at the very well supplied halfway house. All of the staff and volunteers commented on how friendly and professional our conduct was throughout the event.
A special thanks again must go out to all of the staff at Hessle Golf Club and my team who I could not have had an event run so well without.
On a final note James King confirmed that Sprue will sponsor the event for the next 3 years, which is great news and will help to continue the success of this wonderful event.
