The 2019 FIRE SPORT UK Retired Firefighter Golf Championship was hosted by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service at:
Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club on the 21st of August 2019
A warm Yorkshire welcome was given to all competitors for the 26th Annual Retire Fire-fighters Championship. The organising committee, headed by Tony Brown, ensured that everyone had what they needed for the two days of golf and the clubhouse staff worked tirelessly to ensure we were all catered for.
The weather for the competition day was kind with a steady breeze and sun which meant everyone stayed dry (on the outside at least). Old acquaintances were rekindled, and talk of past golfing prowess were again retold as well as adventures from over the years that never seem to grow old and are still as funny.
Those who hadn't experienced North Cliff previously might have expected a coastal links course with firm fairways, sand dunes with few or no trees however, after completing the first two holes on the cliff side a very well designed and laid out parkland course was waiting across the road, a beautiful sight with tight tree lined, lush green fairways and tough undulating greens, making competitors think their way round to score well. Compliments were given to the green staff for presenting the course in such an immaculate condition.
Prizes were presented in age categories (see results below). The best stableford score of the day going to Rhyl Jones from Humberside with 40 points and Steve Cain from West Yorkshire winning the best gross score with 37 points. A special mention to Simon Athey (S. Yorks) who holed his tee shot on the par three 7th hole (whisky was provided).
Thanks to North Cliff Captain Colin Glaves for presenting the prizes to the winners and to everyone who took part to make the couple of days in Scarborough so memorable.
