A magnificent venue awaited the competitors from Hosts England and our friends and Auld Enemy in Scotland at Sherwood Golf Club. A great course and set up fitting of hosting the Match Play International.
A very nip and tuck morning session saw the pendulum swing both ways with some hard fought matches going the distance in the better ball pairs.
A total of 27 points were available for the day: 9 points in the morning pairs and 18 points available in the afternoon Singles.
A very narrow margin and hard fought 1 point cushion was afforded to England with 5-4 taken into the afternoon session singles matches.
The afternoon singles was again to and fro with both teams in winning positions as the afternoon matches unfolded.
With most matches in and played there was a stalemate of 12-12 with England seeking the magic 13 1/2 points to retain the trophy.
So both captains desperately trying to assume the outcome of the remaining matches the atmosphere and tension became more intense with the scores now locked at 13 all. So again both captains conceded defeat gracefully to one another without knowing the outcome of the remaining game still trying to second guess the outcome.
Captains Lee and Steve are now at this point trying to read the body language of the remaining players coming in towards the clubhouse. With the final game in and and the point England needed, the monumental match finished 14-13 in favour of England with the Scotland team more than worthy competitors.
As ever the international was played with highest amount of respect and competitiveness the competition deserves.
A huge thanks to Steve Hunter and his team for the great spirit and endeavour shown in all the games played throughout the day, true competitors and great sports. England look for forward to defending the trophy at Downfield in 2018.
