Cornwall played host to the Sheriff’s Cup 2026, and what a week it turned out to be. The competition brought together teams from across the country, and even further afield, for several days of golf, good humour, fundraising and, at times, the sort of weather that makes waterproofs feel less like clothing and more like life support.

The week began kindly enough, with fine weather for the better ball. For a brief and glorious period, the Cornish skies behaved themselves and allowed everyone to pretend golf was a summer sport. Unfortunately, the weather then remembered where we were and settled into consistent light rain for much of the remainder of the competition. It was not quite biblical, but it was certainly enough to test grips, gloves, patience and the waterproof claims of several well-known brands.

Despite the conditions, the standard of golf remained excellent, and so did the spirit in which the competition was played. Huge thanks must go to everyone who travelled such long distances to attend. The effort made by players, supporters and organisers to be part of the event was very much appreciated, and it made the Sheriff’s Cup feel like the special occasion it is.
There was also a strong social side to the week, with the quiz night proving a huge success. With Andy Sleeman in the role of quiz master, the evening delivered plenty of laughs, a few competitive stares across the room, and the occasional answer that may have sounded more confident than accurate. Most importantly, the night raised a total of £931.52 for The Fire Fighters Charity and Cancer Research UK.

Special thanks go to David Moon and Julie Gray from St Mellion Golf Resort. Their support, organisation and calm efficiency helped everything run smoothly, even when the weather appeared determined to provide its own risk assessment. Without them, the event simply would not have gone as well as it did.

We were also delighted to welcome Bill Lawson from PBI, who travelled all the way from the USA to be with us. His support, sponsorship and commitment to the Sheriff’s Cup were greatly appreciated by everyone involved. At the same time, all those present send their very best wishes to Ian Callaghan of PBI with his treatment. We were very sorry he could not be with us this year and hope to see him back among friends again soon.

For the Cornwall team, it was another case of being agonisingly close. After missing out by just two shots at Gleneagles, Cornwall came even closer this year, finishing only one shot short. That is technically an improvement, although probably not the sort that makes anyone sleep better. Still, it shows just how competitive the team has become, and surely, if the pattern continues, next year has to be interesting.


Congratulations to all the winners and to every player who took part. The Sheriff’s Cup once again showed exactly why this event means so much: competitive golf, strong friendships, generous fundraising and the shared understanding that, in Cornwall, “light rain” can last for quite a long time.
